The timber is used as “stop planks” to block out the river when undertaking lock repairs. They were 15 inch square by 30 feet long.

Diglis Locks Workshop,Locks and Dry Dock in 1968.
The workshop used for building gates and paddle gear was in the old boatmens Chapel with its lovely windows.In the 1970’s it was closed and the skilled craftsmen made redundant.
Green oak was used for construction as seasoned oak would absorb water and split. Max
