Rebuilding a Saab 96.
The Saab 96 was a rugged quality car built in Sweden, it had some quirky features. The gearbox has a freewheel device, allowing engine braking to be disabled, this helps with fuel economy, but brakes must be kept in good condition to use this facility.
Saab 96’s are front wheel drive, this gives the car good roadholding.
An unusual feature on this model is the column gearchange, which can be locked in reverse, an extremely good security device.
The reliable engine on this Saab model is a V4 Ford Taunus design and manufacture, block and cylinder heads are made of cast iron. Most engine spares can be easily obtained and fitted.
The standard Ford carburettor fitted with automatic choke should be changed for a Weber conversion this will give better fuel economy and performance.
The engine has to be removed for clutch replacement, although this is made easy due to the fact front panel complete with headlights can be removed giving excellent access to the power unit. The 96’s bonnet is hinged at front and is easily detached at this time.
Gearbox repairs will need specialist equipment and should be left to the experts, parts are still available but becoming more scarce.
The dual cicuit braking system uses standard components and replacing pads brakes shoes and wheel cylinders should not be a problem.
The front disc callipers can seize after many years’ usage but even these are readily obtainable but should be replaced in pairs.
