The beginng of the end.
When the railway reached the salt works and started to take increasing loads of salt, the end of the canal was in sight. The increasing susidence and property damage, including Chapel Bridge tipping sideways and having to be renewed, persuaded the Salt Union directors to concentrate their business in the open country around Stoke Prior.
