Clutch Scams

basil | 12/6/2006 | 6:56 am

The Clutch Scam.

Your car suddenly develops a fault, in that the more you try to accelerate the slower you go, this could mean the clutch is worn out. But other factors could give this effect. Binding brakes, due to seized wheel cylinders, sticking brake callipers or even faulty gearbox.
Some older models have clutch cable adjustment; incorrect setting will also cause clutch to slip.
You may find that after replacing brake parts, the cause of performance loss, grip is not restored, clutch will have been slipping for too long and replacement will be essential.
Fitting a new clutch without checking for dragging brakes and other causes, could be a waste of money, and you have been conned.

Clutch Replacement Scam.

Some Unscrupulous garages replace your clutch with a cheap spurious unit, or even just replace the clutch plate, this will soon be noticed as your clutch will have a short life, and you will be back to square one. Tip ask to see old parts, even dispose of these yourself, but handle with care as asbestos may be involved.
Another cost saving exercise by clutch fitter is to neglect replacement of expensive clutch release bearing, some cars now have the clutch slave  cylinder incorporated with release bearing, this makes renewal of this component essential. A loud screeching noise when depressing clutch pedal, will be the first thing you notice, and clutch unit will need more expense.

Clutch fitting scams.

After taking your car to a clutch fitting company, with a slipping clutch, the so called mechanic tells you your flywheel is scored and will need machining to restore the surface. This will only occur if your car has been driven for hundreds of  miles with a slipping clutch, if your car has just developed a slipping clutch it is unlikely that your flywheel will have been scored. Ask to see the part in question before it is removed from your vehicle.

Sometimes you will be told by quick clutch company that your car needs a clutch release bearing (Expensive on modern cars) and trouble is the worn bearing has damaged the gearbox and we will have to fit a new gearbox, do not be taken in by these scams, always ask for a second opinion. Better still use a reputable garage to replace your clutch, one that has been recomended, this may appear to be more expensive but will definitly be your best option.
