The Lock at Tewkesbury.
For a very different holiday why not try hiring a narrow boat. If you have never experienced silently gliding along a waterway in the middle of the countryside you will be in for a real treat and discover a different world.
There are several hire companies, located in most areas of the country; you should be able to locate one within easy driving distance of your home.
Narrow boats come in all shapes and sizes catering for large or small groups, room on board can be a bit restricted for a large family but with a little organizing this can be overcome.
A luxury boat for two people would be ideal but will work out more expensive per person.
It is useful to have someone to take over the controls and help with locks and mooring, and also make the tea.
All boats come filly equipped for self-catering, although an advantage with a canal is that most are within easy waking distance of a pub, you will be able to dine out in a different location each evening, as well as lunchtime stop.
Early booking is advised during the peak season as boats get quickly booked up, you may get a bargain deal by choosing an oft-peak week.
Parking your car is usually free at the base where hiring but there may be a small charge at other boatyards.
Boats are filled with sufficient diesel and cooking gas to complete your trip but you may need to refill water tank.
