The Henry and the Moreland awaite a cargo in the Vines Park Basin in Droitwich, now infilled for the inner ring road. Between them is the Three Brothers narrow boat which was known as the “makeweight”. When a Trow loaded the maximum for the canal of 60 tons, the smaller boat loaded 30 tons and was hauled down to the Severn at Hawford Lock. Here it was transhipped, by wheelbarrow and then the Trow set off for the Severn Estuary. All this intensive work had to be undertaken in the dry, the lack of mechanical handling doomed the Droitwich salt trade in competition with ICI on the river Weaver who were and still are producing vacuum low heat evaporation salt for the world markets.
